THE LOVE TEST – 1935 – JUDY GUNN – RARE DVD
A small London chemistry laboratory has been hired to find a way to make plastic Kewpie dolls fireproof. No matter what they try, the little plastic dolls will burn quickly and furiously. Coincidentally, the head chemist is going to quit his job in a month because of a severe medical problem . . . . He has uncontrollable hiccoughs! Thompson is a chemist with the personality of a used car salesman who desperately wants to become the head chemist, but he discovers from the silly sexy secretary Minnie that a woman will be named as head chemist. Mary Lee is a serious chemist with the looks of a tomboy who thinks society should not be bothered by sex or love because it makes people very unproductive . . . . So to speak . . . . . Anyway, when Thompson hears that this girl will become their boss instead of him, he hatches a plan to take her out of the running. He decides that one of the chemists must make love to the iceberg lady and get her to quit her job, or at least become so unproductive because of a wild night life that she will not get the promotion. He chooses shy chemist John Gregg for the job, and they force him to make advances to the iceberg lady even though he has no interest in her . . . . . Well . . . . . Of course the iceberg lady turns out to be one hot mama after some help from her worldly-wise neighbor. John Gregg, played by Louis Hayward, who would later find fame in movies and on television as a detective called The Lone Wolf, falls in love with the melting iceberg. It looks like their torrid courtship will take her out of the running to be the new boss, but even though we are talking 1935 glass ceiling era, she is promoted to the top job, and our slick Thompson decides to change course and get Gregg fired so he can make love to the now sensuous and beautiful Mary. This leads to that and on the day that Gregg is fired he accidentally discovers the formula for making the little plastic dolls fireproof, but slick Thompson will find his formula and claim it as his own. It appears that the shy chemist who fell in love with Mary will be out of the way while slick Thompson takes credit and reward for the new discovery, and even though Mary despises him, he may win her hot hand also. . . . . Maybe . . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
