Brutish Hank Smith, is the biggest bully of the coal stokers working on board a freighter. But when spoiled society darling Mildred Douglas, a unhappy passenger on the ship, makes her way to the boiler room to see “how the other half lives” she is frightened and appalled at the sight of Hank and calls him a hairy ape. Hank is unmanned by the insult and becomes desperate to confront Mildred and somehow comes to terms with the insult.
