THE MAN FROM UTAH – 1934 – JOHN WAYNE – RARE DVD
John Preston, played by John Wayne, is down on his luck and looking for a job. After helping the town sheriff capture a couple of robbers he is offered a strange challenge. The sheriff wants him to enter in a rodeo held in Dalton and do some undercover investigation to see if the rodeo is honest or rigged.
The rodeo scenes that you will watch are real, filmed in May of 1932 at the Calgary Stampede Rodeo. Rodeo champion Cheyenne Kent was played by Yakima Canutt, a real rodeo champion who became an actor and best friend of John Wayne. Yakima Canutt also did some directing work in Hollywood, and is most famous for directing the chariot racing scene in Ben Hur.
On the big day of the rodeo in Dalton, John Wayne competes with one of the bad guys, his real-life buddy Yakima Canutt. When young John Wayne first met Yakima in 1932 they immediately became friends and worked together between scenes to develop new horse stunts, and they also developed a technique that was used by everyone afterwards where they would arrange the camera just so, and themselves just so, and when one of them fake-punched the other in the face, it looked much more realistic than movie fights up to this time. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
